Harrah hires Mike Lowe as baseball coach

Harrah didn't have to look far for its new baseball coach.

The Panthers turned to assistant coach Mike Lowe this summer to take over the program and replace Charles Copeland. Lowe was a longtime coach at Jones.

“I think it's the right fit,” Lowe said. “The school is the place to be. I really enjoyed everything about being at Harrah as a teacher and coach. I think the kids are top-notch and hungry to be better.”

Lowe will be tasked with keeping together a team that made the Class 4A state championship game but was rocked when Copeland was arrested in late May.

Copeland was arrested on a complaint of lewd acts with a Harrah student. He was placed on administrative leave and will not return to the school.

“Everybody always says kids are resilient,” Lowe said. “They felt comfortable this summer just because I've been there a year. They played loose this summer, which is what you want kids to do. They play best when they feel comfortable.”

Lowe spent 17 years at Jones before coaching softball at Guthrie for two years. He joined Harrah's staff last season.

“Jones was a great place to work,” Lowe said, “and maybe that's why I like Harrah so much because it's so close to Jones. It feels like home. I live so close to Harrah and my wife still teaches at Jones. It's a neighborhood, I guess.”

Sooners offer Tulsa Washington guard Trey Phipps

Local college basketball coaches are noticing the summer that Tulsa Washington star Trey Phipps is having.

After continuing to have outstanding showings on the summer prep circuit, Oklahoma offered the 6- foot -1,160- pound guard on Tuesday, Phipps announced on his Twitter account.

Phipps was named Most Valuable Player of the Class 6 A state tournament in March.

He scored 42 points in the championship game, including 20 in the fourth quarter to help Tulsa Washington win the title.

Rivals rates Phipps as a three-star guard. He had been committed to Tulsa for more than a year before de committing earlier in the week. Phipps' stellar shooting stroke and scoring abilities are his strongest attributes.

Phipps also holds an offer from Oral Roberts, but his recruiting is likely to rise throughout the remainder of summer.
