On vacation, how's the cell service?

- Paula Burkes

Would you use limited Wi-Fi or cellphone service on your vacation as an excuse not to check in with the office?

According to a recent survey by Richmond, Virginia-based Allianz Global Assistance USA travel insurance and assistance company, 49% of Americans lie about such connectivity.

Millennials, or those born 1981 to 1996, are most likely to use the “I'm cutting out” excuse (59%), followed by Gen X'ers, or those born 1961 to 1981 (49%), and baby boomers, those born 1946 to 1964 (32%). While there's no difference between the sexes, the most likely vacationing worker to lie about service is a white (53%), collegeeducated (50%), millennial (59%) in the Northeast (53%) who is married (53%) with children (53%) and working full-time (50%) for an annual salary more than $50,000.

Meanwhile, 24% of Americans make a point not to go on vacation in places where poor cell reception or Wi-Fi access could disrupt their connection to the office.

Only 35% of American workers don't check email on vacation. Among those who do, 34% say it's because it's easier to catch up when they return. Others say their managers expect it or they're the only ones that can handle certain tasks.

Millennials wouldn't mind checking in on work more, if it meant more vacations. Comparatively,

older workers would rather take fewer vacations if they could relax off the grid.

My working Facebook and LinkedIn friends

weren't surprised with the findings.

Katy Gustafson, principal at Gooden Group public relations firm, went on a cruise in January and opted not to buy the pricey Wi-Fi package.

“But it took a lot of preparation with my team and my clients,”

Gustafson said.

Said fellow Oklahoma State University graduate Laura Garrison Russell, “I don't check in while on vacation and my boss doesn't expect it. Vacation is to get away, not work in a different location."

Elizabeth Broadway,

a fellow Midwest City High School classmate and Tampa engineering firm owner, said, “Although I'm the owner of a small business, when I'm on vacation, I'm on vacation. Actually, I don't get vacation. I should have said a Friday or Monday off.”
