Paintings show `bold expressions of women'
Areas of vivid acrylic paint, sketchily outlined with charcoal, create a dynamic interaction, in paintings by Janice Mathews-Gordon.
The “bold expressions of women” in her “All My Sisters” paintings are on view at JRB Art at The Elms, 2810 N Walker.
She described the show as a “tribute to my four sisters” and her feminist mother, as well as a celebration of all women.
Arbitrary, squarish heads often float over the roughly outlined bodies of women in many of her semi-abstract, semi-realistic works.
A young woman “Coming of Age” confronts us forcefully, with legs spread wide and arms folded, in one painting by Mathews-Gordon.
In “The Source,” a mother nurtures and shelters an orange-hued child, while two tall lavender women lean “Against the Wind” in a second work.
A hand on hip anchors the strong stance of a “Survivor,” but a background crowd underlines that there are still “Miles to Go” in two more works.
A bit more abstract are several 30-by-30-inch works by Mathews-Gordon called “She Sings,” “She Laughs” and “She Speaks.”
Even smaller and more abstract are two of her works suggesting the sea's
curling motion called “Pink Wave: Gathering Force” and “Catch the Wave 3.”
Wonderfully energetic and effervescent, as well as semi-abstract, are the mixed media paintings in a second show by Kathy Rodgers Wilson.
A “Spring Garden” of lyrical, multi-colored marks spreads across the picture plane, and a single lush roses fills it, in two of Wilson's best efforts.
The shows by Oklahoma City area artists MathewsGordon and Wilson are highly recommended in their run through Aug. 31.
