Defending champs eliminated at U.S. Open

Both defending champions have been ousted from the U.S. Open.

No .1 seed ed-Naomi Osaka's 10-match winning streak at the U.S. Open and ti tl e defense ended Monday in the fourth round.

Osaka joined 2018 men's champion Novak Djokovic on the sideline before the quarterfin­als, exiting with a 7-5,6-4 loss to the 13 thseeded Be linda Ben cic under a closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium on a rainy afternoon. Djokovic stopped playing in his fourth- rounder Sunday night because of a problemati­c left shoulder.

Osaka has been playing with an achy knee and was given a pain-killing pill by a trainer midway through the second set Monday.

"I honestly didn't move well today. The knee was a little bit annoying in the movement aspect," Osaka said ." But I think that that's something I should have overcome."

In other women's action Monday, No. 25 seed Elise Mer tens from Belgium cruised into her first appearance in the U.S. Open quarterfin­als with a 6- 1 , 6- 1 victory over American wild card Kristie Ahn.

Donna Vekic, the No. 23 seed from Croatia, survived a match point to beat Julia Goerges 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3 and advance to the U.S. Open quarterfin­als, her deepest run in any Grand Slam

In men's action, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal easily reached the quarterfin­als at a ninth consecutiv­e Grand Slam tournament by powering past 2014 champion Marin Cilic 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

No .13 seed Ga el Monfils of France quickly advanced to his third U.S. Open quarterfin­al, needing less than an hour and a half to dispatch Pablo Andujuar 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Monfils next takes on No. 24 Matteo Berrettini, who earlier defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets to become the first Italian man in the U.S. Open quarterfin­als since 1977.

No. 6 Alexander Zverev was undo ne by 17 double- fault sand bowed out to No .20 Diego Schwartzma­n 3- 6, 6- 2, 6-4, 6-3.

Colts name Jacoby Brissett as starting QB

Jacoby Brissett will be the starting quarterbac­k for the Indianapol­is Colsts for the foreseeabl­e future and Brian Hoy er will become Brissett's backup.

A little more than a week after Andrew Luck's abrupt retirement up ended Indy' s longterm plans, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press that Brissett had signed a contract extension.

Br is set t' s deal came just hours after the Colts announced Hoyer, a longtime backup in the league, would join the team as the new No. 2 on the depth.

The Colts acquired Br is set tina trade just before the 2017 season opener from the New England Patriots. He went 4-11 as the starter that season when Luck missed all 16 games.

Jones holds off Larson to win Southern 500

Erik J ones used every bit of stamina he had at D arlington Raceway in South Carolina. Few know better than Jones the effort it took to hold off Joe Gibbs Racing team mate Kyle Busch and win the raindelaye­d Southern 500.

Jones took the lead from Kyle Larson 85 laps from the end and stayed in front of Busch the rest of the way to add a win at iconic Darlington Raceway with his first NASCAR Cup Series victory at Daytona in July 2018.
