If you have ever dreamed of being a Master Gardener but could not find the time to attend the annual fall training program and perform the volunteer hours, then the upcoming “Gardening 101 Workshop” may be the perfect class for you.

Master Gardeners have created this workshop specifically for those who have the desire to be a Master Gardener, but who cannot dedicate the time involved with a volunteer program because of full-time employment or other commitments.

Every spring, we have many people call us at the Oklahoma State University Oklahoma County Extension Center asking if we have any classes on these topics. We do offer various classes on gardening, lawn and landscape topics throughout the year, but the most comprehensive workshop that we have is held every spring and it's time to reserve your space now!

The “Gardening 101 Workshop” is a three-Saturday workshop starting on Feb. 22. Topics will cover everything the home gardener needs to know about gardening from the ground up. The workshop features OSU state specialists and garden experts speaking on various horticulture topics.

Whether you are a novice or a garden veteran, this fun and instructional threeday workshop will prepare you to start the growing season right. You will receive university-based training in many subjects. Some of the topics will include vegetable gardening, flower gardening, soil health and composting.

The workshop also will cover how to choose plants for specific places in the landscape, and experts will discuss the best plants to use in Oklahoma gardens and landscapes.

In addition, you will learn about lawn maintenance and correct timing of treatments to help make lawn care a success. You will also learn about proper irrigation and water conservation.

Part of the workshop focuses on those pesky pest problems we all face and will help you learn to identify and control plant diseases. There also will be a special “Insect Adventure” with an OSU entomologist and much more!

This workshop is sponsored by the OSU Oklahoma County Extension Master Gardener volunteers who have been trained and certified and help mentor the community regarding various horticulture programs.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 22, Feb. 29 and March 7 at the OSU Extension Conference Center, 2500 NE 63.

Registration costs $75 per person, which includes all three days, and is due by Feb. 1. Registration information can be found at http://oces.okstate.edu/oklahoma or on Oklahoma County Extension's Facebook page.

If you would like more information on this program, give us a call at 713-1125.
