A national publication for health care decisionmakers has named OU Medical Center one of the 100 Great Hospitals in America for 2020. Becker's Hospital Review included the local medical center on its list, along with prestigious institutions like Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Hospitals included on this list have been recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes and staff and p hy sician satisfaction. These institutions are industry leaders that have achieved advanced ac credit ation and certification in several specialties. The list also includes industry innovators that have sparked trends in health care technology, hospital management and patient satisfaction.

“Receiving this type of recognition is even more valued as our physicians and staff have worked so hard on the front lines during the current pandemic ,” said David Teague, MD, OU Physicians Director of Adult Services, Peri operative Surgical Director of OU Medical Center and Department Chair of Orthopedics. “Saving lives and protecting our patients, team and colleagues is what drives us every day. Knowing that a national thought leader like Becker's recognizes our work, leadership and sacrifices energizes us to continue moving forward on our journey of excellence.”

O UM edi cal Center serves as the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Oklahoma and features the state's most experienced transplant team,

which has a combined 50 years of experience. The medical center is building a new 450,000-squarefoot patient tower slated for completion this year, which will add 144 beds and 32 new ope rating rooms. U.S. News & World Report recognized OU Medical Center as No. 1 in both Oklahoma City and the state for 2019-20.

“We have a great team of physicians, leaders and staff ,” said Chuck Spic er, president and CEO of OU Medicine and a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives .“This isn' t

just a recognition of what we are doing, but what we have to continue to do to be Oklahoma's health care leaders. If you look at the list, you see Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, O UM edi cal Center, all on the same list. It is humbling to be included and we are energized to tackle the ongoing important work of improving health for Oklahomans.”

Kris Gose, R.N., MBA, president of OU Medical Center, said ,“This is a tremendous national validation of the years of hard work and exemplary

achievement by our team. Patients come here f or essential healthcare services that are not offered anywhere else in the state, and it is the reason medical students come here to train. This recognition is true validation of our values and our goals.”

Asked what makes OU Medical Center great, Teague replied, “Every Oklahoman of every background is welcome and cherished here. We stand ready with nationally recognized treatments delivered by world-class expert teams who never forget that our patients deserve the kindness and compassion embodied in the Oklahoma Standard.”

Te ague agreed with Spice rt hat national recognition affirms more than the hospital' s excellence.

“It represents validation that our state produces results, in this case medical care, that rivals the best efforts of the best institutions nationally,” Teague said .“That is news we should all celebrate.”

He said a regional medical center of national repute is a fundamental building block for the reputation and the economy of central Oklahoma and the entire state.

“Government and business leaders use these measures in recruiting additional investments into our communities,” Teague said. “World-class physicians and researchers look to join these high-performing medical centers, thereby multiplying the expertise available and the discoveries coming from the center.”

Becker' s Hospital Review selected the hospitals for inclusion on its list of 100 Great Hospitals in America based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report's 201920 rankings, CareChex, Healthgrades, CMS star ratings, Leapfrog grades and IBM Watson Health Top Hospitals. Becker's also sought nominations for this list.
