Dress for success

- By Linda Miller

Let's celebrate the dress. National Dress Day was Saturday, and while it may not be the most recognized day of the year, the dress deserves a heap of praise and recognition.

Not only is it easy to wear, there' s also one for every occasion from a backyard pool party to a professional workplace to a cocktail party. And let's not forget the muchheralded little black dress that can go just about everywhere.

Much of the appeal of a dress is that it' s a one-and-done look. No mixing or matching tops and bottoms. At the same time, it can be versatile. Slip on a fitted jacket or sweeping duster for a different look. Add a belt, scarf or layers of necklaces for a quick update.

Dresses are memorable, too. Is there a woman who doesn't remember the dress she wore top rom? And no fan of redcarpet fashion can forget Bjork's iconic swan dress at the Academy Awards in 2001 or Kacey Musgraves in headto-toe layers of pink tulle in 2019.

“Dresses are inclusive to all body shapes and sizes and universally flattering for all,” said Crystal Bland, owner of Milo & Lily, an Oklahoma City-based online boutique with a showroom in Yukon. “In one piece of clothing, a dress has the ability to make a woman feel confident, comfortable and chic. Dresses are like magic.”

Char let S au ls, owner of Boutique One in Nichols Hills Plaza, is a fan, too. There's a flattering style for everyone and fabric sand details are endless.

“Dresses are the best,” she said, adding they've stood the test of time and gone through many remakes from the early Renaissance years to modern times. Through it all, dresses have been amazing.

“Dresses can be both sophisticated and conservative or they can be fun and playful or flirty and sexy,” she said.

Though a staple year-round, Sauls said dresses tend to get even more attention during spring and summer. Dress trends for spring include vintage florals, open backs, easy to wear sheaths and column styles, side cut-outs and voluminous details such as puff sleeves and oversize skirts.
