Kingfisher hires Taylor Cooper as head girls basketball coach
Kingfisher girls basketball will have a new coach on the bench.
The Kingfisher board of education unanimously approved the hiring of Taylor Cooper on Thursday.
The former preps star has spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach, four years at McGuinness and then one at Edmond Santa Fe.
“It’s my first head coaching job so I’m really excited,” Cooper said. “We got a lot of work to do as far as getting the girls prepared and used to the new normal for them and getting them situated but, I’m excited.”
As a player, Cooper won a pair of Oklahoma state championships with Bethel (2011) and Shawnee (2012) before playing college basketball at Oral Roberts and then Texas A&M.
Cooper will succeed Gerrett Spears, who led Kingfisher to a 14-9 record last season. Spears resigned last month after two years, according to the Kingfisher Times.
“My five things are hard work, discipline, respect, accountability and just being able to compete every single day,” Cooper said.
“I think those five things will be enforced daily in my program. My ultimate goal is for them to be the best version of themselves.”
