Nine homes to be fixed by Rebuilding Together
Rebuilding Together Oklahoma City will repair nine homes on Saturday, with more than 100 volunteers providing critical home repairs for some of the metro area’s most vulnerable, including seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and families with young children.
“From a pandemic to ice storms to record low temperatures, our communities have weathered a tough year,” said Lauren Sullivan, executive director of Rebuilding Together Oklahoma City, which is working In partnership with Rebuilding Together’s National Rebuilding Month initiative. “Our organization is proud to help restore the homes and dignity of our neighbors who need it most.”
April is National Rebuilding Month, a time spent focusing on critically needed repairs, highlighting the organization’s completed renovations and planning the work ahead.
Throughout the year but especially during April, Rebuilding Together OKC encourages and empowers homeowners to remain safely at home by installing grab bars, handrails, flooring, smoke
alarms, proper ventilation and adequate weatherization. They also repair or replace HVAC units, roofs, appliances and a variety of other necessary home modifications.
Repairs are provided at zero cost to neighbors in need, who are often faced with diminishing resources and must
choose between food and medicine over significant and crucial home repairs.
According to the National Center for Healthy Housing, 45 million homes in the United States have at least one serious home hazard present; these have the capacity to directly impact a family’s physical health and safety.
“Our health care system is under extreme pressure, and each of our resources are stretched thinner than usual,” Sullivan said. “We have a responsibility to make sure our fellow neighbors’ homes are healthy and safe and encourage everyone in our community to look out for each other.”
Since 1992, Rebuilding Together Oklahoma City volunteers — more than 50,000 — have updated and refurbished more than 2,000 homes, 30 nonprofit facilities and eight public school buildings — a value of more than $20 million.
