Alexander discusses his reopened recruitment
Recruiting waves were made Thursday across Oklahoma when Heritage Hall senior guard Trey Alexander tweeted he was reopening his recruitment.
Alexander initially signed with Auburn in November, only a week after committing. He chose the Tigers over offers from Arkansas, Georgia, Grambling State, Kansas, Oklahoma and Ole Miss, which comprised his final seven schools.
A four-star guard, Alexander is rated the state’s top recruit in the 2021 class.
During his senior season, he helped Heritage Hall advance to the Class 4A state championship game. He averaged 23.6 points along with 8.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game. The Chargers had one of the best runs in school history during Alexander’s tenure, winning one state championship and having two runner-up finishes, as well.
Alexander spoke with The Oklahoman on Friday to discuss his decision to leave Auburn and about what’s next:
What led you to wanting to reopen your recruitment?
Alexander: “I just felt like most of the stuff (Auburn) told me in the beginning of recruitment didn’t stick. They didn’t keep their word, basically. That’s the main reason I decided to decommit.”
Are there any schools who have already reached out to you?
“There have been a couple. Arizona, Western Kentucky, OU, Oregon, Iowa State so far.”
What are some of the things you’re looking for in a program?
“The only thing I can think of right now is just letting me do what I was doing. Mainly just being able to play as a freshman, having a big impact as a freshman while being able to learn and grow, things like that.”
You initially had seven schools you choose from when you first committed. Are you going to reconsider those programs or start with a clean slate?
“It’s kind of a start over type thing for me. There’s no school that has the upper hand right now. Whoever shows me the best and fits what I want during the recruiting process is who’s going to get me. Those initial schools don’t really mean anything anymore.”
