MORNING ROUNDUP
Lawrence named Jags starting QB
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer announced Wednesday that Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, would be the team’s Week 1 starter.
Lawrence had widely been expected to seize the role ever since the Jaguars secured the top pick and subsequently selected the Clemson product. But Meyer and his assistant coaches long refused to declare that the 6-foot-6, 213pound rookie had won the job, instead keeping Gardner Minshew in the mix.
COWBOYS: Offensive lineman Connor Williams and safety Damontae Kazee have joined the list of Dallas players under COVID-19 protocols, bringing the total to six along with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
The other players out because of health and safety protocols are defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, former OU receiver CeeDee Lamb and safety Malik Hooker. Safety Israel Mukuamu was on the list but returned to practice Wednesday.
STEELERS: Pittsburgh released former Oklahoma State linebacker Calvin Bundage as teams begin paring rosters for the start of the regular season.
PATRIOTS: Running back Sony Michel, a first-round pick of the New England Patriots three years ago, was traded to the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday for a conditional fifth- and sixthround pick in the 2022 draft.
Michel appeared to be on the roster bubble in New England, where Damien Harris is listed as the starting running back.
