MOORE — Gentry Williams sprinted out of the Tulsa Booker T. Washington helmet and was the first Hornet onto the field.

The senior star, who is No. 1 on The Oklahoman's Super 30, said he had goosebumps. It was his first game back after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last season.

That's why he was so energized leading his team out of the tunnel, excited to get his season started.

“It was a special moment,” Williams said. “I'm grateful. Glad to be back out here. I'm not going to take this lightly this year.”

Williams and Class 6A-II fifth-ranked Tulsa Washington had plenty of energy Thursday night at Moore Stadium, dominating en route to a 51-7 win against Southmoore to open the season. Williams was a star on both sides, having an impact as a receiver and on defense from his safety position.

But he was far from the only Hornet to have a special performance.

Junior Micah Tease, who is one of the top juniors in the state, also had a stellar performance.

He caught four passes for 117 yards and a touchdown and should have had a second one if not for a drop in the open field.

“I just got too excited, man,” Tease said.

On defense, he had a monster hit on top of numerous tackles and pass break ups.

Southmoore (0-1 overall) was held to 103 yards of offense. Quarterback Noah Peters completed only eight of his 21 passes and threw two interceptions. Its only score came on Kolton Bennett's 79-yard kickoff return touchdown late in the fourth.

Although Williams and Tease, the two standout recruits, had big performances, numerous Hornets were able to contribute, as well.

Five different Tulsa Washington players scored a rushing touchdown. Junior quarterback Lathan Boone completed 16 of 18 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns while adding a score on the ground.

With Williams back and Tease continuing to show he's one of the state's best, Tulsa Washington is off to a hot start. Tease doesn't expect that to slow down.

“This was a statement game to let people know we're back,” Tease said. “Last year was last year. This year, we're ready to take state.”
