Dockins helps Moore snap long skid

MOORE – Marcus Dockins Jr. has played multiple positions on the football field for as long as he can remember.

His dad is a big reason why. “You never know where you’re going to play once you’re older,” Dockins Sr. told his son. “You never know what college coaches want you to play at the next level.”

He’s taken his father’s advice. Dockins Jr. lined up at four different positions on both sides of the ball for Moore on Friday night. His versatility did wonders for the Lions.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior rushed six times and recorded three catches for 76 yards and three touchdowns at three different positions, leading Moore to a 40-14 victory over Westmoore. The win snapped Moore’s 21-game losing streak to the Jaguars.

For his performance, The Oklahoman’s staff has named Dockins its Player of the Week.

“It’s a great feeling,” the 17-yearold Dockins Jr. said about breaking the streak. “We all went to our teammate’s house. We just played music, we were all happy. It’s a great feeling to know that we ended the streak after 20 years.”

Moore has been able to record wins against other teams over the past two decades. But the Lions have been unable to overcome Westmoore in their “Moore War” matchup. And even though none of the Moore players were born the last time the Lions beat Westmoore, they were fully aware of Westmoore’s streak heading into the game.

They even discussed it in the locker room with Dockins Jr. leading some of the pep talks.

“Going into the game we just had the mindset of, ‘We’re not coming out of this game with a (loss),’” Dockins Jr. said. “It’s our senior year, we’re not going away with a (loss). So we went out there and did that. We were just ready for that moment.”

Moore and Westmoore traded touchdowns for the first four drives of the game. But that’s all it took for Dockins Jr. and the Lions to find their stride and blow the game open.

Moore stormed off to 27 unanswered points with Dockins Jr. scoring the final three touchdowns to seal the win.

His scoring barrage included a 23yard touchdown run where he cut through the line of scrimmage, sidestepped a defender and ran the final 10 yards untouched. He also caught a touchdown as a wide receiver and ran for another as the wildcat quarterback.

“Marcus is a player,” Moore coach Brad Hill said emphatically. “He scored from three different positions on the field and played defense all night. He’s a big-time player.”
