Turnovers costly as Chiefs lose to Ravens

- –Wire reports

Patrick Mahomes' flawless September run is over.

The Kansas City quarterback was intercepted late in the third quarter, one of two turnovers by the Chiefs that led to a 36-35 loss to Baltimore on Sunday night. It was Kansas City's first September defeat since Sept. 18, 2016. The Chiefs had won 15 in a row in the month since then. Mahomes was 11-0 as a starter in September with 35 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He threw for three more TDs on Sunday, and Kansas City seemed to be rolling along after Tyrann Mathieu picked off Lamar Jackson twice in the first quarter and left the Ravens playing catch-up.

The Chiefs eventually returned the favor with those two giveaways of their own.

BROWNS: Baker Mayfield's refusal to miss a snap Sunday after the Browns starting quarterback's left shoulder had popped back into place evoked memories of his idol. Well, at least it did for Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett.

“The guy's tough," Garrett said of Mayfield. "Honestly, I wouldn't say he's a carbon copy, but he's like Brett Favre 2.0. Less picks, though."

Mayfield, a former OU star, hurt his non-throwing shoulder while attempting to make a tackle during an interception return in the second quarter of Sunday's 31-21 win over the Houston Texans in the home opener at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Mayfield finished 19-of-21 passing for 213 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Also, Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry could miss multiple games with a sprained medial collateral ligament suffered in Sunday's win. TEXANS: Quarterback Tyrod Taylor is day to day with a hamstring injury as the Texans face a quick turnaround with a Thursday night game against Carolina.

If Taylor can't play, Deshaun Watson will not be an option, with coach David Culley saying Monday that Watson would be inactive for Thursday's game just as he has been for the first two games. Watson has been listed as inactive/not injury-related following his trade request and after 22 women filed lawsuits alleging sexual assault or harassment. Culley said they haven't yet discussed the possibility of signing another quarterback this week. COLTS: Indianapolis quarterback Carson Wentz sprained both ankles during Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams and coach Frank Reich said Monday he's not sure when Wentz will return. Wentz limped off the field midway through the fourth quarter after his right leg got twisted in a pile. He did not return.

Reich said Wentz injured his left ankle earlier in the game and played through the pain.

BEARS: Whether they want to or not, the Chicago Bears just might have to go with rookie Justin Fields at quarterback.

Coach Matt Nagy said Monday that the team had ruled out a torn ACL for starting quarterback Andy Dalton, and it was awaiting more test results on his left knee before deciding who will start this weekend at Cleveland.

DOLPHINS: One day after things couldn't have gone much worse for the Miami Dolphins, they received doses of positive news, especially on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's ribs.

Coach Brian Flores suggested Tagovailoa could be in uniform for Sunday's game against the host Las Vegas Raiders, essentially confirming an NFL Network report that tests showed no major damage and it's basically a case of pain tolerance.

“If Tua can go, he's going to go,” Flores said.

Huskers RB back might be out for season

Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin Jr. is out indefinitely, and possibly for the season, with a knee injury he sustained in Saturday's loss at Oklahoma.

Coach Scott Frost said Monday that Ervin has an injury to his right patellar tendon, which runs from the bottom of the kneecap to the top of the shinbone.
