3RD STRIKE
Yet another severe storm slams metro
For the third time this week, severe storms damaged property in the Oklahoma City area late Thursday and early Friday.
Damage from strong winds and hail littered parts of southwest Oklahoma City and Del City. The roof was ripped off a strip mall on Sunnylane Road in Del City, while a large portion of a building housing an Oklahoma City business collapsed.
Business owners and tenants in Del City were onsite removing items and assessing damage Friday morning.
Hao Le, owner of Top Nails & Spa, said her son’s friend called and told the family to check on the nail salon after driving by and seeing the damaged roof. The strip mall’s roof and portions of the salon’s ceiling now sit in the backyard of a vacant house located behind it.
“I just heard hail, to me it was all hail,” said Paula Sam, a neighbor on the street behind the strip mall. “So it could’ve been wind and stuff, but I was listening for the hail so that’s what I was hearing.”
Le, who has been in the location for seven years, said she cried when she first walked into her shop.
“It hurt me a lot,” she said. “I just remodeled. We just remodeled in April.”
Le said one roofing company already gave an estimate of one to two weeks for repairs, but such decisions will rest with the building’s owner. Le said she worries about how it will affect her family because she will have to be closed indefinitely until repairs can be completed.
“The good thing is my supplies, my furniture are not damaged that much,” Le said.
In southwest Oklahoma City, Jerry Goodrich, owner of S&S Textiles has spent 30 years in his location providing the community with screen printing, embroidery and other services. Friday morning, he said he drove in to find out most of his building was gone.
