Carroll’s 3 TDs pace Jenks to rout
EDMOND — Jenks coach Keith Riggs admitted some of his players remember the last time the Trojans and Edmond Santa Fe faced off in the regular season.
The 2020 district game was canceled as Jenks dealt with COVID-19 issues, meaning both teams finished unbeaten in district play. Santa Fe won six games while Jenks won five, giving the Wolves the district title.
In the end, Jenks got the final laugh, winning the Class 6A-I state championship at Wantland Stadium.
Yet in 2019, Santa Fe went on the road and topped Jenks, and it was the game Wolves' star receiver and Oklahoma State commit Talyn Shettron broke out with three touchdown catches. It led to Santa Fe winning a district title.
“We knew they were going to give their best effort,” Riggs said.
It wasn't enough. Top-ranked Jenks won its fifth straight game, topping No. 4 Santa Fe 35-14 on Thursday night at Wolves Stadium. Jenks scored 25 unanswered points after the Wolves took a 14-10 lead late in the first half. The Trojans, having beaten Santa Fe and Broken Arrow, are now the likely district champions with the toughest games on the schedule behind them.
Junior running back Jaiden Carroll was outstanding. He rushed for 190 yards on 23 carries with three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He racked up numerous broken tackles and made life difficult on the Wolves' defense all game.
“It sets us up for a district championship,” Carroll said of the win.
Freshman quarterback Shaker Reisig was also strong, completing 12 of 17 passes for 211 yards and a score for Jenks (6-1 overall, 4-0 District 6A-I-1).
The Wolves briefly took a 14-10 lead after Scott Pfieffer threw an 10-yard touchdown pass on a slant pattern to Shettron, but Jenks responded and scored on a Carroll touchdown run with only seconds left before half.
Twice, Santa Fe (4-3, 3-1) threw interceptions in the red zone. Shettron had 11 catches for 135 yards with the score. His older brother, Tabry, had the other touchdown reception.
Freshman running back Demarius Robinson tallied 119 yards on the ground, surpassing 900 rushing yards on the season.
For Santa Fe, next week's game against Broken Arrow has added importance. A win likely secures a first-round home playoff game. A loss likely sends the Wolves on the road.
In the second half, Jenks took control quickly. Carroll had a 47-yard rushing touchdown. The next possession, Max Paskvan hit a field goal, then Reisig found Colby Parsons for a 24-yard touchdown, effectively sealing the game.
Jenks proved its top ranking in 6A-I, putting the path to a district title in its own hands.
“We still have unfinished business,” Carroll said.
