Top HS football recruit in Oklahoma chooses Sooners

Gentry Williams will stay close to home in college.

Williams, the top-rated prospect on The Oklahoman's 2022 Super 30 rankings, announced Monday he was verbally committing to OU. He chose the Sooners over Florida, Missouri and Southern California, the other three schools in his final four.

Rivals ranks Williams as a four-star defensive back and the 67th-best overall prospect in the 2022 class. He's the fourth highest-ranked verbal commit for the Sooners 2022 class, which Rivals ranks eighth in the country, and the 16th overall prospect.

He became the fourth Oklahoma prospect to verbally commit to the Sooners in the 2022 class, joining Deer Creek offensive lineman Jacob Sexton, Tulsa Union defensive back Jayden Rowe and Broken Arrow defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings.

BASKETBALL: Three Big 12 teams are ranked in the The Associated Press Top 25 men's college basketball poll released Monday. Kansas is No. 3, Texas is No. 5 and reigning national champion Baylor is No. 8. Gonzaga is the runaway top choice in the poll with 55 of 63 first-place votes, followed by No. 2 UCLA which earned the other eight votes.

SOFTBALL: Oklahoma State has reschedule­d its softball game with North Texas for 6 p.m. Thursday at Cowgirl Stadium, head coach Kenny Gajewski announced. The game with the Mean Green, originally scheduled for Oct. 13 at Cowgirl Stadium and canceled due to field conditions, will round out the Cowgirls' 2021 fall schedule.

GOLF: Top-ranked Oklahoma State women's golf team earned the individual and team titles on Monday at the Jim West Challenge at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas. The victory earned OSU its thirdstrai­ght team tournament win and was Caley McGinty's second-straight individual title. OSU set course and tournament records in the event.
