EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma recently launched the Junior Rowing program, a new mentorship program pairing middle and high school students in the local community with university mentors, as well as UCO’s three-time defending national champion rowing team.

The program is designed to introduce students from underserved populations to the sport of rowing and give them the opportunity to learn more about higher education. In addition to the UCO rowing program, several other areas across campus are assisting with the program, including Leadership Central, TRiO Upward Bound Math and Science, TRiO Talent Search and Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). The sessions will offer participating students a variety of diverse insights into higher education.

“This program gives us the perfect opportunity to build stronger ties with students in the metro,” said Christopher Lynch, vice president for Enrollment and Student Success at UCO.

“Students will engage in watersport activities while learning life lessons, building confidence, leadership skills and developing effective communication practices. We are excited to have our first cohort start this fall and plan to host at least two cohorts of students each year.”
