The Oklahoman

Dear Governor Stitt:

-

The death penalty is a broken process from start to finish. Time and time again, we have seen innocent persons wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in Oklahoma. Additionally, the administration of executions is utterly flawed: Every method of execution comes with a substantial risk of extreme pain and torture.

Our state has been allowed to conduct executions cloaked in secrecy and free of public and judicial scrutiny by relying on drugs from unknown and untested sources, and to employ personnel of unknown and unverifiable qualifications—with disastrous results. This pattern should be unacceptable in a civilized society dedicated to transparency and the rule of law.

Oklahomans have watched as our State has administered four consecutive flawed executions, proving that the current execution protocol is prone to disastrous mistakes that lead to torture. We urge you to stop Oklahoma’s executions by taking the two following actions immediately:

• Issue reprieves/stays on all pending execution dates. • Honor the previous agreement of no executions ahead of the pending federal court litigation in February.

Oklahoma’s use of the death penalty should give us all deep pause. There is no method of killing a human being that is consistent with our constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. The time has come for Oklahoma to end this failed experiment.
