Cordelia Ann Herring
EDMOND - A beautiful, sweet, tough-as-nails mother, Cordelia Ann (Craig) Herring, got her angel’s wings December 5, 2021 in Edmond, Oklahoma at the age of 79. She suffered from dementia, but she remained a loving lady. Cordelia Ann was born on June 11, 1942 in Houston, Texas, the oldest of three children born to H.G. and Estelle Craig. She was a 1960 graduate from Jay High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Christian Education at Oklahoma City University.
While growing up, the Craig Family moved to many places in Texas and Oklahoma. Cordelia Ann spent most of her childhood years in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She moved to Oklahoma City at the age of 18, attended Oklahoma City University, and lived in the metro area the rest of her life. There she met and fell in love with Lawrence Barton, Jr., the father of her child. She married George Herring in 1966. Her daughter, the light of her life, was born in 1968. By 1970 she was a single mom. She didn’t remarry. In 1981 she joined St. David’s Episcopal Church.
Cordelia Ann ended up having many different jobs. She worked at the Welfare Department for eight years and Community Counseling Center for five years. At various times, she worked at Braum’s, 7-11, the Metropolitan Library, and the Secretary of State’s office. She enjoyed reading romance novels, watching crime shows, listening to Elvis and other 50s music, shopping, and spending time with her family.
Cordelia Ann was a devoted mother and grandmother and would do anything for her family. There were many times that she picked her grandsons up from school and took them out for ice cream. She had the best intentions. Most of her house was filled with items she had bought to give to other people. Even though she was only 18 months older than her brother, she was like another mother to her younger siblings. She did all she could to take care of the people she loved. She felt responsible for her grown daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons, always telling them what they needed to be doing. She gave all she could and never asked for anything in return. She had a lovely face, brown eyes, and beautiful dark brown hair which became all white as she aged.
Cordelia Ann is survived by her daughter, Angelique Mae (husband Ronald Chamberlain), grandchildren, Evan Alexander and Eric Vincent, all of Edmond, brother, A.C. Craig, of Oklahoma City, several nieces, nephews, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Wanda Kay Clough.
Services will be held at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church on December 10, 2021 at 10:00 am. Viewing will be at Smith and Kernke Funeral Home on May Ave. on December 9, 2021 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
