Concert to support high school, bluegrass society

- Kimberly Burk

DEL CITY — Capitol Hill High School Principal Adam Jewell will make a guest appearance during the Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Music Society’s concert on Saturday.

The 6 p.m. concert at the Patriot Event Center, 3925 SE 29 in Del City, is a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Capitol Hill High School, which was founded solely to support the school.

Students of Mary Mayhew’s Fiddle Ranch will open the show with Christmas selections, followed by performances by Southbound Mule, the Bazemore Bluegrass Band from Bristow and the Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Music Society Board Band.

Jewell is scheduled to sing at least a couple of songs during the concert, said Armand Edelman, a member of the Kiwanis Club board of directors.

Kiwanis Club members are selling tickets to the show, as are members of the Capitol Hill Alumni Association and A Chance to Play, a nonprofit that provides musical instruments to students who cannot afford them. People who have unused musical instruments in their closets are invited to bring them to the concert. Donated instruments will be refurbished free of charge by Larsen Music before distribution to the students.

Adult tickets are $10 and also will be available at the door. Children 12 and younger will be admitted free. Tickets are $7 for members of the Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Music Society, and memberships will be available at the door.

Edelman said one of the programs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club is Students of the Month and Students of the Year.

The two students recognized every month receive a $50 bill, and the two annual winners are awarded $500 college scholarships.

Proceeds from advance ticket sales will be divided between the Capitol Hill High School projects and the nonprofit bluegrass society, which is still recovering from revenue lost when concerts were canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information or to donate to the society, call 405-317-2618 or 405-2269191.

Local musicians are invited to bring their instruments and participate in jam sessions from 5 to 9:15 p.m. in the rooms at the front of the building. A concession stand will be available in the auditorium.
