OBITUARY: Greg Robinson, who won two Super Bowl rings as defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos and spent nearly four decades coaching in the NFL and college, died Wednesday from a form of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 70. Robinson also was the defensive coordinator for Texas’ 2004 winning Rose Bowl squad and in 2013. He was head coach at Syracuse from 2005-2008.
SOCCER: Energy FC announced Friday that the organization is reducing its workforce. No information was provided on the number of employees being released. The club has suspended play in 2022 to allow for renovations at Taft Stadium.
MLB: Former players David Cone and Eduardo Perez are joining Karl Ravech to form a new broadcast team for ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” telecasts. Alex Rodriguez, who had been on the telecasts during the past four seasons, will shift to eight Sunday night alternate telecasts on ESPN2 with Michael Kay, a mainstay on New York Yankees’ broadcasts since 1992.
COLLEGE: Kansas State assistant Collin Klein, who had been serving as the interim offensive coordinator during the bowl season, was given the fulltime job on Friday after an impressive performance by the Wildcats in the Texas Bowl.
GOLF: Long considered the biggest event in women’s golf, the U.S. Women’s Open now has prize money and future sites to match. The U.S. Golf Association announced Friday the purse will nearly double this year to $10 million, by far the richest in women’s golf and challenging top prizes in women’s sports. The purse was $5.5 million when Yuka Saso won at Olympic Club last year. ...
Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm didn’t need much time to get back into the swing of competition Thursday in the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii. Coming off the longest voluntary breaks of their careers, Cantlay overcame a bogey start with flawless play at Kapalua for a 7-under 66 and Rahm had a 67 despite failing to capitalize on two of the par 5s. Cameron Smith had a pair of long eagle putts to lead at 8-under 65 on a gentle, gorgeous day to start the new year on the PGA Tour.
