Learn how to be advocate for the aging

The Oklahoma Aging Advocacy Leadership Academy is accepting applicatio­ns for a six-month course that will provide free training for individual­s to become informed volunteer community leaders and advocates for Oklahoma’s aging population.

The course will last April to September. Classes typically meet all day Wednesday and Thursday in Oklahoma City, but are set to be virtual in 2022 on the following dates, which are subject to change: Session 1: April 27 and 28.

Session 2: May 25 and 26.

Session 3: June 22 and 23.

Session 4: July 20 and 21.

Session 5: Aug. 24 and 25.

Session 6: Sept. 28 and 29.

Attendance and participat­ion are required for each of the 12 full days. There is no cost to participat­e.

Applicatio­ns are available online and must be received, along with a letter of support by March 18.

Scholarshi­ps offered

Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club Higher Education Scholarshi­p applicatio­ns are being accepted for the upcoming 2022-23 academic school year.

The club will be sponsoring 10 graduating senior Cherokee students with an $800-per-academic-year scholarshi­p or endowment.

Scholarshi­p applicatio­ns will be considered for fulltime undergradu­ate students enrolled in an accredited institutio­n of higher education. Applicatio­ns must be received by June 30.

Where you can get free tax help

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will provide free income tax preparatio­n and e-filing to UCO students, faculty, staff and the public through April 9.

The VITA program, sponsored by the IRS, offers free tax help to low-income taxpayers, people with disabiliti­es and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

VITA will provide services from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays in Room 107 in the College of Business building on UCO’s campus. VITA will be closed March 12-19 for UCO’s spring break.

Those seeking assistance should bring all necessary tax documents, including Social Security cards for themselves and dependents, W-2 forms and 1099 forms from banks, brokerages, contract work and other income sources. Recipients from charitable contributi­ons and educationa­l and day care expenses should also be included.

Internatio­nal students must bring passports, visas and any 1042-S forms received from 2021 employers, as well as W-2 and 1099 forms and charitable contributi­on receipts.

Harding Charter students perform

Students from Harding Charter Preparator­y High School recently performed at an areawide two-day clinic at Northwest Classen High School that included students from other Oklahoma City schools.
