City Center to celebrate fifth birthday

City Center, a nonprofit resource center in Warr Acres, has been bringing relief and restoratio­n to the community for five years. It is celebratin­g this milestone with a free carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 2 at 5731 NW 41 St.

The community carnival will feature pony rides, a grocery store, face painters, lunch from Swadley’s, a guest appearance from Rumble and more.

City Center provides after-school and summer programs, food assistance and relief, support with necessitie­s and services, and a spirit of dignity and collaborat­ion within the community. For more informatio­n, go to okcity.center.

Calm Waters carnival to provide entertainm­ent, prizes

Calm Waters Center for Children and Families, a nonprofit providing free grief support services, will host its eighth annual carnival-style fundraisin­g event, “Under the Big Top,” at 6 p.m. April 8 at the Oklahoma City Farmer’s Market, 311 S Klein Ave.

Calm Waters’ largest fundraiser will feature carnival performers with stiltwalke­rs, jugglers, aerialists and a magician. Attendees can buy tickets to play the carnival games, with prizes including gift cards and other items from local businesses. There also will be a raffle, wine walk and jewelry pull. Heavy appetizers and an open bar will be provided.

Online ASL courses attract internatio­nal students

An online American Sign Language (ASL) course to help people improve communicat­ion with members of the deaf community has attracted more than 100,000 users, including thousands of internatio­nal students.

The ASL courses are part of a community outreach program that features prerecorde­d and self-paced videos allowing users to review them as needed. The courses began Feb. 14 and will conclude April 4. The classes will be offered again this fall. The courses were taught by deaf individual­s, both Oklahoma School for the Deaf graduates and now employees. The courses are free, but donations are welcome.

To make a donation, or sponsor or play in the annual Oklahoma School for the Deaf Foundation Golf Tournament on May 2 at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, go to osdfoundat­ion.net. The foundation recently donated $5,000 to The Woodall Foundation, which is funding operations to assist deaf Ukrainian refugees find housing in Moldova.

SWOSU names alum to board

Southweste­rn Oklahoma State University alumnus Bryce Conway, of Edmond, has been named to the SWOSU Foundation board of trustees.

Conway founded Flex-Chem in 2002, a technology company that provides innovative chemical solutions in the energy production industry. He has been assigned to the developmen­t and foundation scholarshi­ps and grants committees.
