How does OU’s win streak stack up nationally?
NORMAN — For the second consecutive week, top-ranked OU had to scratch and claw to finish up its weekend series with a win.
But the Sooners were able to do it, keeping their winning streak alive with a 2-0 victory on Saturday against UAB.
That followed the 3-1 victory over Baylor the Sunday before to close out that series.
The Sooners went 3-0 last week with a five-inning victory over Wichita State and then a two-game sweep of UAB on Friday and Saturday to improve to 32-0 on the season.
OU is one game away from the best start in school history, behind only last season’s 33-0 start, which ended with a 7-6 midweek loss at Georgia.
The winning streak is the 15th-longest in NCAA history, with Arizona holding the record with 47 consecutive victories from April 5, 1996 to March 23, 1997.
The longest winning streak in program history was 41 from Feb. 24-May 19, 2019.
Here is a quick rundown or last week and the week ahead for the Sooners:
Snow coming through, but banged up
With such a stacked offense — the Sooners are leading the nation in batting average (.383), home runs per game (2.59), on-base percentage (.499), scoring (9.44 runs per game), slugging percentage (.783) — and plenty of stars, senior utility player Taylon Snow sometimes gets overlooked.
But Snow just keeps producing. She went 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs, a stolen base and two walks last week to raise her batting average to .500. Snow is one of just five players nationally to be hitting at least .500. Teammate Jocelyn Alo is the only other power-conference player to be at or above the mark. Alo is hitting .513.
Snow had to leave Friday’s win over UAB, though, after a collision at first base when an errant throw took her into the path of the Blazers’ runner.
She did not play in Saturday’s series finale.
Fielding a bit of a concern
With a dominant offense and overwhelming pitching, it’s hard to find warts with the Sooners.
If there is one, though, it might be their ability to field.
The Sooners were one of the top fielding teams in the country a year ago with just 25 errors in 60 games and a 0.982 fielding percentage (sixth-best nationally).
OU had a pair of multi-error games last week, with two in the win over Wichita State and two more in the first game against UAB.
The Sooners are No. 70 nationally with a 0.967 fielding percentage and 23 errors to this point.
OU has six games with multiple errors this season.
