Scobey, Treat to face off in race for clerk’s seat

- Jack Money

Voters in Oklahoma County on April 4 will choose either Democrat Derrick Scobey or Republican Maressa Treat to be Oklahoma County’s next clerk.

Both candidates turned their attention toward April’s general election after emerging victorious from party-specific primaries held Tuesday as part of a special election to replace David Hooten, who resigned in June after having sexual harassment complaints made against him by women who worked on his staff.

“In my mind, I have another race to run so I don’t even want to stop and celebrate for a moment,” Scobey said, promoting his management experience and echoing his theme that he brings people together. “It may not be a non-partisan race, but it is a nonpartisan office and we all know it, whether we want to admit it or not.”

Treat, meanwhile, said she was looking forward to continuing to tell Oklahoma County residents about her commitments to promote government accountability and be a good steward of tax dollars.

“I am incredibly thankful to all of my supporters, the amazing team of family and friends around me, and all the voters today, and especially coming out on Valentine’s. It is a day you don’t usually think about voting, so I am very humbled by that and I am excited to hit the ground tomorrow and connect with even more voters in Oklahoma County.”

Unofficial results tabulated by Oklahoma County’s election board showed that Scobey outdistanced four other Democrats to face Treat, who bested two from her own party to represent Republicans in the race.

Because the primary was part of a special election, Scobey and Treat advanced to the April 4 election without the need for a runoff, officials said.
