The Oklahoman

Dear Oklahoma Lawmakers:

-

The companies and organizations co-signing this statement serve Oklahomans from all backgrounds. We want to foster an environment where all consumers are treated with dignity and respect. We also know that diversity and inclusion directly increase economic growth in America. 2SLGBTQIA+ Oklahomans are a vital and irreplaceable part of public life.

This year, you have introduced over 30 anti-2SLGBTQIA+ bills.

Specifically, we are concerned about discriminatory bans on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender Oklahomans. Bills like HB 2177, SB 613 and SB 129 restrict the only evidence-based treatment for gender dysphoria, especially harming transgender youth. These laws further mistreat an already marginalized group.

We are also worried about legislators silencing drag performers from expressing themselves in our state.

Restricting drag shows with vague guidelines infringes on First Amendment rights and enforces discriminatory gender norms onto private businesses and individuals. HB 2186 and SB 503 continue the long history of arresting and criminalizing 2SLGBTQIA+ people for merely existing in public.

To align with our values, we ask that you vote against legislation targeted toward transgender Oklahomans. Not only do these bills directly harm our

2SLGBTQIA+ consumers, but Oklahoma will lose millions of dollars from lost concerts, tournaments and sporting events. Additionally, the state will inexcusably waste millions of taxpayer dollars on litigation fees defending these bills. Let’s invest in equal treatment and opportunity for all Oklahomans.

Thank you.
