Choctaw vs. Deer Creek tops Week 6 slate

- High School Insider Nick Sardis

It’s Week 6 of the Oklahoma high school football season, which means more district games are coming up across the state.

Here are The Oklahoman’s top 10 games this week.

1. No. 2 Choctaw (3-0, 2-0 District 6A-II-2) at No. 3 Deer Creek (3-2, 2-0): Likely the top two teams in District 6AII-2, this will play a huge role in what team claims the title in that district. Choctaw won 28-16 last year.

2. No. 4 Tuttle (4-1, 2-0 District 4A-2) at No. 3 Blanchard (4-1, 2-0): The schools aren’t far from each other, and they’ve had some memorable battles recently. How will Blanchard quarterback Carson Cooksey and the Lion offense fare against Tuttle’s defense that is allowing just 11 points per game?

3. No. 5 Edmond Santa Fe (3-1, 2-0 District 6A-I-2) at No. 8 Mustang (4-1, 1-1): Edmond Santa Fe is back to being a solid team after going 1-9 last season, while Mustang is also having a nice year. Edmond Santa Fe junior running back Demarius Robinson and Mustang junior quarterback Trajan Williamson are just a couple players who are having great seasons, and they’ll be athletes to watch in this one.

4. No. 7 Jenks (2-3, 1-1 District 6AI-1) at No. 4 Norman North (4-1, 1-1), Thursday: Jenks will look to bounce back after falling to Westmoore 16-12 last week, while Norman North is coming off a 28-14 win against Broken Arrow.

5. No. 7 Clinton (3-2, 2-0 District 4A-1) at No. 8 Weatherford (4-2, 2-0): Both teams are on two-game win streaks, and a victory this week would be huge in the District 4A-1 title race.

6. No. 3 Guthrie (5-0, 1-0 District 5A-2) at Bishop McGuinness (4-1, 2-0):

Guthrie’s defense has simply been phenomenal, allowing just three points all season. But Bishop McGuinness has a solid offense led by senior running back JP Spanier.

7. No. 5 Sand Springs (3-2, 1-1 District 6A-II-1) at No. 4 Stillwater (3-2, 2-0), Thursday: Sand Springs will try to prove it can hang with one of the best programs in Class 6A-II. Stillwater, the defending champion, is on a roll, winning three straight games.

8. No. 9 Cushing (4-1, 2-0 District 4A-3) at No. 1 Wagoner (5-0, 2-0): A rematch of last year’s title game, Cushing will try to get revenge after falling to the Bulldogs 24-21. Wagoner won it with a game-winning field goal.

9. No. 7 Lone Grove (3-2, 0-2 District 3A-2) at No. 9 Plainview (4-1, 2-0):

Lone Grove is on a two-game losing streak but faced tough opponents in Heritage Hall and Marlow. Plainview’s only blemish this year is a 35-21 loss to Class 4A Newcastle.

10. No. 2 Lincoln Christian (5-0, 1-0 District 3A-3) at No. 8 Checotah (5-1, 2-0): Tulsa Lincoln Christian is a powerhouse and has been a consistent force in recent years, but Checotah is having a great season. Checotah senior Jacob Jones is having a solid year at quarterback, and the Wildcats could be a sleeper in Class 3A.

—All games Friday unless noted.
