Robert “Bob” W. Broyles

NORMAN - Robert W. “Bob” Broyles, PhD, drifted away peacefully in Norman, Oklahoma on February 1, 2024, at the age of 83. He was born on January 4, 1941 in Denver, Colorado to his parents, Mildred and E.D. Broyles. Early in his life, the family moved to Colorado Springs, where he spent his formative years. Bob excelled in track and football, earning numerous medals, ribbons and awards. He was fortunate to receive an athletic scholarship that enabled him to continue his education. Following his graduation from Colorado Springs High School, Bob received a BA from Colorado College, an MA from the University of Nebraska, and a PhD from the University of Michigan. During his academic career Bob held tenured faculty positions at the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada, Widener University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of Oklahoma. During his tenure at OU, he served as departmental chair and directed a graduate program in health administration. In addition, he was the author or co-author of over 200 refereed publications comprised of text books, journal articles and papers appearing in the proceedings of national or international associations. In recognition of his academic achievements, the University of Oklahoma awarded Bob a Presidential Professorship and, following his retirement, he was given the title of Professor Emeritus. In addition to his academic career, Bob served in the U.S. military. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. When he completed his military service in the Army, he occupied the rank of Captain. Bob is survived by Rita, his wife of 49 years, and daughter Erin Clogston and her husband, John Clogston. He will be greatly missed, but we know his was a long life that was well lived. No Services will be held this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob’s name to Wildcare Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Humane Society, and the Gary Sinise Foundation.
