The Flaming Lips to play two free OKC shows

- Brandy McDonnell

Oklahoma City psychedelic art-rockers The Flaming Lips will return this summer to the hometown venue where they played one of the “legendary” concerts of their career.

The three-time Grammy Award winners announced Monday plans for a two-show “Summer Freak Out” Aug. 3031 at OKC’s Zoo Amphitheatre.

Admission to the shows will be free with RSVP, according to the announcement.

The “Fearless Freaks” previously recorded their first live concert film, “UFOs at the Zoo: The Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City,” at the OKC Zoo’s venerable venue in September 2006. When they announced the October 2012 encore, dubbed “Freak Night,” frontman Wayne Coyne told The Oklahoman that the original Zoo Amp concert “might still stand as our greatest show that we’ve ever done.”

The Lips’ shows are the latest concerts announced for the 90-year-old outdoor stage, which is under new management and undergoing infrastructure updates.

The first concert on the venue’s delayed summer lineup is a July 20 event featuring R&B legends and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers The Isley Brothers with special guests The Commodores and The Spinners. The Zoo Amphitheatre’s summer concert lineup also includes Ice Cube and his “Legends of Hip Hop Tour” on July 20, Blues Traveler on Aug. 3, Howard Jones and ABCO on Aug. 24, Dirty Heads and Slightly Stoopid on Sept. 1, and Cake on Sept. 8.

What will The Flaming Lips be playing at their OKC shows?

Formed in OKC in 1983, the Lips will celebrate the enduring influence of two of the band’s seminal albums at the OKC Labor Day weekend shows.

At the Aug. 30 concert, the alt-rockers will perform in its entirety their trailblazing 2002 album “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” which includes the Grammy-nominated opener “Fight Test,” the Grammy-winning instrumental “Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)” and the emotional anthem “Do You Realize??,” which in 2009 was named Oklahoma’s official state rock song.

For their Aug. 31 show at the newly upgraded OKC venue, the experimental rockers will play their 1999 masterwork “The Soft Bulletin” track by track.

Ranked No. 3 on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s, it features beloved songs such as “Race for the Prize,” “Waitin’ for a Superman” and “The Spark That Bled.”

How can people get tickets to The Flaming Lips’ OKC concerts?

Tickets to the summer OKC shows will be free with RSVP, according to the announcement.
