90-year-old Olympia res­i­dent Margie (DeFord) Car­denRaines passed away on Thurs­day, Nov. 29, 2018, with the sup­port of fam­ily mem­bers and won­der­ful care­givers. Born Margie Lil­lian Ha­ley to John “Jack” Ha­ley and Lilly(Korte­gard) Ha­ley on March 28, 1928, she is sur­vived by her older brother Earl and pre­ceded in death by her par­ents, her younger brother Bob, and hus­bands Gene DeFord, Elden Car­den, and Dave Raines. Margie grad­u­ated Olympia High School in 1946. While in school, she worked at The XXX Diner as well as at Joint Base Lewis-McChord dur­ing WWII. Her por­trait was sketched by a friendly POW. Her first job out of school was as Ex­ec­u­tive Sec­re­tary for the Di­rec­tor of Em­ploy­ment Se­cu­rity. Margie mar­ried Gene DeFord on Feb. 9, 1947. To­gether they had five chil­dren who sur­vive her: Joan, Linda, Fred, Don, and Mike. She is also sur­vived by 10 grand­chil­dren and 14 great­grand­chil­dren. Margie, “Mrs. DeFord,” worked for more than 30 years for the Olympia School District and re­tired as Sec­re­tary at Bos­ton Har­bor El­e­men­tary School. A long­time mem­ber of Gull Har­bor Lutheran Church, she loved gar­den­ing, art, ski­ing, golf­ing, sewing, en­ter­tain­ing, spend­ing time with friends and fam­ily, and hang­ing out on her beach at Bos­ton Har­bor in Olympia. A pub­lic cel­e­bra­tion of life will be held at noon on Satur­day, Dec. 15, 2018, at Gull Har­bor Lutheran.
