Burley earns 30th win at U- R

- By Utica- Rome Staff

VERNON — Another week of racing at UticaRome Speedway resulted in another winner in the Modified division as Todd Burley became the eighth different driver to win in eight events this season.

Other winners on the Sunday were Heath Carney in the Sportsman, Shawn Frost in the Pro Stocks and Bill Mason in the Pure Stocks.

The front row of Shannon Whaley and Jason Rood brought the Modified starting to the green flag to begin their 30 lap feature with Rood jumping to the point with Bill Trexler, Jr., Whaley, Burley and Steve Hulsizer chasing at the completion of lap one.

While Rood stayed up front, Burley slipped into second by the fifth circuit with Ronnie Johnson moving into the third spot a lap later.

Ryan Phelps, and Stewart Friesen rounded out the top five.

Rood’s night ended on lap 11 when his car broke in turn four. After another caution on lap 15 Burley pulled away from the field. There was a heated battle for second, however. It wasn’t until lap 29 that Mike Mahaney took the runnerup spot from Johnson and Friesen and Hulsizer trailing. The win was Burley 30th career win at UticaRome Speedway.

Heath Carney led the opening five laps of the 20 lap Sportsman main event, but Chris Mackey grabbed the lead on lap six.

Mackey’s stint at the point only lasted two circuits, however, as Carney took the top spot by lap eight. Despite Matt Janczuk’s best efforts to track him down, Carney led the rest of the event to grab his first career Sportsman win.

Pole sitter Jim Money led the opening circuit of the Pro Stock 20 lap feature only to yield it to fifth place starter Mark Effner by lap two. Effner showed the way for a handful of circuits until Shawn Frost, from ninth, slipped by to the lead on lap six.

Despite several caution periods, Frost held on to score the win over Jeff Pastorella, Effner, Tom Denton and Chris Carr.

Pure Stock action saw Rob Thieme out front for the first four laps of the 15 lap main event until Bill Mason slipped by on lap five.

Bill Mason outran Chris Cunningham in the late stages to pick up the win with Cunningham, Thieme, Frank Hyatt and Ricky Breed rounding out the top five.
