Memorial Day Observance

Monday is the observance of Memorial Day. The Charles Miller Post 140 Canastota American Legion will host this year’s Memorial Day ceremonies in Canastota. Parade chairman is First Vice Commander Ron Larmer.

The parade will form at the Roberts Street School at 9: 30 a. m. and step off at 10 a. m. They will proceed to Peterboro Street and to Clark Memorial Park for ceremonies. The Charles Miller Post 140 Honor Guard will form at the post home on South Peterboro Street before moving to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery veterans section where they will render military honors. The VFW Post 600 will render military honors at the veterans memorial in Lenox Rural Cemetery on Nelson Road.

Ceremonies at Clark Memorial Park will commence at 11 a. m. with Charles Button, chaplain of the Legion Post 140 to give the invocation and the benedictio­n following the program. The guest speaker will be Carla De Shaw, mayor of Canastota. The Color Guard will give a gun salute, the roll call of all deceased veterans will be read and music will be provided by the Community Choir. Taps will be played by Peter Finocchiar­o.

At the conclusion of the ceremonies at Clark Memorial Park all veterans and parade participan­ts are invited to an open house and refreshmen­ts at the American Legion home, corner of South Peterboro and Rasbach streets.
