The VHPD project is a pilot collaborative initiative by HUD, the Department of Labor (DOL), and the Veterans Affairs (VA) to explore innovative early interventions to help prevent veteran homelessness. While it assists all qualified veterans, the program is targeted to service members returning fromthewars inAfghanistan and Iraq. VHPD assistance is focused on maintaining or accessing stable housing, health care and employment services, either directly or through referral to community resources including: Financial assistance, supportive services, access to VAHealth Care Benefits and education and Employment Opportunities. The CNY Veterans Outreach Center was formed to provide and conduct charitable educational, social, and housing services for veterans and their families in need. The Veterans Outreach Center was developed by an Iraqi War veteran who realized there was a lack of services for veterans in Upstate New York. The center serves on average 300 veterans and their families a month. Other services available at the center include: food pantry, access to clothing and household items, outreach, internet access, advocacy and connection to VA benefits.
