John J. Shovlin, 90, of Oneida

ONEIDA>> John J. Shovlin, 90, of 112 Hagan Circle, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 12, 2015, in Oneida Healthcare, where he had been a patient for six days.

John was born on June 3, 1925, in Donegal, Ireland, and came to the U.S. as a young boy. His family settled in the Long Island area. He was a graduate of Jamaica High School, Class of 1943.

He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the USS California. In 1947, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Yeoman N1. He served again during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952.

From 1947 to 1979, he served with the U.S. Treasury Department as a postal inspector.

On Sept. 15, 1951, he married Dorothy Wilson in Elkton, Md. They spent 25 years in the Seaford, L.I, N.Y., area and moved to Oneida in May 1999.

John attended St. Joseph’s Church in Oneida. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. He played golf until the age of 85.

Surviving besides his wife, Dorothy, are his children, James B. Shovlin of Oneida, Joseph A. (Debra) Shovlin of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Theresa Ann (William) Giangarra of Northport, N.Y. and Neal P. (Kerry) Shovlin of Lincoln University, Pa.; nine grandchild­ren and eight great-grandchild­ren, Kara (Sean) Patterson and their children, Briar and Saryn, Brian (Tiffany) Shovlin and their children, Addison and Aiden, Tyler Shovlin, John (Maura) Shovlin and their children, Reagan and Keera, Kristy (Joe) Campagnolo and their children, Peyton and Christina, Kathleen Giangarra, Elizabeth Giangarra, Megan Shovlin and Ethan Shoviln; one sister, Nora Ann Carroll of Davies, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015 at St. Patrick’s Church, 347 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. Richard J. Kapral officiatin­g. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy following the Mass. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributi­ons may be made to DAV, Regional Office, 130 S. Elmwood Ave., Ste. 620, Buffalo, N.Y. 14202. Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. 342 Main St., Oneida, N.Y.
