ONEIDA>> Harriet Weimer Vanderwerk­ern Hower, 94, formerly of 226 Farrier Ave., Oneida, and Canastota, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at the Katherine Luther Home, Clinton, following a lengthy illness.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1920, in Canastota, the daughter of Almond and Mabel (Olcott) Weimer.

Harriet lived in Canastota for many years, graduating from the Canastota High School in 1940. She later lived in Oneida for 31 years, moving to Clinton in 2001.

She worked at Oneida Limited in Sherrill, and later General Electric in Syracuse for several years during the 1960s. Harriet was Madison County’s first home health aide, retiring in 1981, after 10 years of service.

Harriet was a member of the United Church of Canastota, and the Koffee Klatch for many years.

She enjoyed collecting lighthouse and elephant items.

She first married Leon E. Vanderwerk­en on June 28, 1941, in Chittenang­o. Leon died on Aug. 26, 1967. Har- riet later married Donald Hower on Oct. 29, 1983, in Wampsville. Donald died in 1992.

Surviving are: her daughter-in-law, Karen Vanderwerk­en of Ft. Worth, Texas; three grandchild­ren, Brian Randall Vanderwerk­en, Eric Leon Vanderwerk­en, and Shari Baurle Green and her husband, Greg F. Green; a great-granddaugh­ter, Emma-Michele Green; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harriet was predecease­d by her son, Dr. David L. Vanderwerk­en; two brothers, Burdette Weimer and Richard Weimer; and her sister, Margaret (Weimer) Schmitt.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. The Rev. William M. Wilcox, pastor of the Fyler Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lenox Rural Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In her memory, contributi­ons may be made to Hospice Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, N.Y. 13413, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
