ONEIDA >> Phillip M. Purdy, 86, Middle Road, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, in the Crouse Community Center, Morrisvill­e, where he had been a patient for the past two and onehalf months.

Born in Hamilton on Feb. 11, 1930, he was the son of Kenneth and Elda Moore Purdy. A resident of Oneida for the past 58 years, Phil was a graduate of Hamilton High School and Colgate University, where he received a full academic scholarshi­p. He married B. Jean Madore in Vernon, Texas, on Dec. 5, 1957. Jean died on July 11, 2015.

Mr. Purdy retired in 1995, as an administra­tive lieutenant of the Madison County Sherriff’s Department and previously retired in 1984, as a sales representa­tive with Metropolit­an Life Insurance Company. A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a first lieutenant with the United States Air Force, with the responsibi­lities of a navigator. Phil continued in the Air Force Reserves as a captain.

He was a member and past commander of the American Legion, Madison Post No. 1555, the Vernon Rod and Gun Club, an active member of labor management rela- tions committee and past president of the Madison County Deputy Sherriffs’ Associatio­n, long time member of the Executive Board of the New York State Deputy Sherriffs’ Associatio­n and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his two daughters and sons-inlaw, Dixie and Bruce Sanspree of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Pamela and Wayne Houck of Utica; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Deirdre Purdy of Canastota and Ian and Jaclyn Purdy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his five grandchild­ren, Danielle Houck, Jacob Purdy, Finn Purdy, Jared Sanspree and Chris Sanspree; and several nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by a sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday from the CampbellDe­an Funeral Home, 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. Brian Fellows officiatin­g. Interment with full military honors will be made 10 a.m. Thursday in Woodlawn Cemetery, Hamilton. Friends may call at the funeral home 5-7 p.m. Wednesday.
