Teen airlifted after 2-car crash
DEERFIELD >> A Sunday night accident involving a car and a pickup truck led to one passenger being airlifted to Syracuse with multiple injuries.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, the serious twocar motor vehicle accident took place on State Route 8 in the Town of Deerfield on August 7 at approximately 7:45 p.m.
The accident occurred when Julia Doris, 21, of Whitesboro, was driving west in her 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier on Davis Road East and preceded to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of State Route 8. Doris then attempted to cross State Route 8 and drive onto Davis Road West but did not see a 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, driven by Matthew Eilers, 22, of Yorkville, that was traveling southbound on State Route 8. Doris pulled out in front of Eilers, and the front of the Yorkville man’s truck collided with the passenger side door area of Doris’ vehicle, causing the Whitesboro woman’s Cavalier to strike a stop sign before coming to rest in a nearby ditch.
A 14 year-old front-seat passenger in Doris’ vehicle had to be extricated by the Deerfield Fire Department with hydraulic equipment. After extrication, the passenger was transported to a nearby landing zone that the fire department had set up and was air lifted to SUNY Upstate Medical Center with injuries to her shoulder, chest, hip and leg area.
Eilers complained of knee pain, while Doris complained of chest pain. Both were transported to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center for treatment.
Doris was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way at a stop sign and is scheduled to appear in Deerfield Town Court at a later date.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by members of the Deerfield Fire Department, Utica Ambulance Service, Prospect Ambulance Service and Kunkel Ambulance Service, as well as Mercy Flight.
