CANASTOTA>> Luella R. Ball, 86, of 140 E. Center St., Canastota, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Oneida Healthcare, following a brief illness.

She was born on Oct. 8, 1930, in Canastota, the daughter of Lewis and Thelma (French) Spratt.

Luella has been a lifelong resident of Canastota, graduating from Canastota High School in 1948.

She worked for General Electric in Syracuse for 20 years, retiring in 1973.

Luella enjoyed arts and crafts, as well as knitting and crocheting. She often knitted baby blankets for area waitresses, shawls for patients at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, and many Alpaca knit hats for members of the military who were serving overseas throughout the years. Luella was also an avid reader. She and her husband served on the Canastota Beautifica­tion Committee for many years.

She married Billy R. Ball on Dec. 4, 1955, in Canastota. Billy died on Oct. 27, 2015.

Surviving are: two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Edward Tallman of Bouckville, and Christine and Keith Krause of Rotunda West, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Leslie Ball of Canastota; 13 grandchild­ren; nine great-grandchild­ren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Luella was predecease­d by a daughter, Billie Lou Cesario.

At Luella’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Arrangemen­ts are under the supervisio­n of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In her memory, contributi­ons may be made to the Canastota Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 81, Canastota, N.Y. 13032.
