The Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center St. will continue its free movies on Tuesdays in the Lawson Community Room at 5 p.m.

These are scheduled for an adult audience.

Jan. 10: “The Legend of Tarzan,” rated PG-13. Tar- zan, who is living in England, is called back to the jungle to investigat­e incidents at a mining encampment.

Jan. 17: “Free State of Jones,” rated R. Newton Knight, a Civil War deserter, leads a rebellion that will change the course of history.

Jan. 24: “Star Trek Beyond,” rated PG-13. The crew of the USS Enterprise encounters a ruthless new enemy.

Jan. 31: “Me Before You,” rated PG-13. A small town girl bonds with a paralyzed man she provides with care.

Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., eBook & Overdrive Workshop. This session for beginners will walk through how to use the free eBooks available through the Mid-York Library System. The handson workshop will walk you through the process from beginning to end, so please bring the device you would like to read eBooks on and have handy your library card number and any password specific for your device.

The Hamilton Public Library invites one and all to join in celebratin­g the grand opening of the newly renovated teen space! Stop by between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 and test out the newly comfy chairs, play a game with a friend and help participat­e in a pizza tasting to determine the best pizza in Hamilton. Many thanks to the Friends of the Library for finding this fabulous renovation project and to the Sigma Chi of Colgate Foundation for its sponsorshi­p of the personal device charging station provided in the new teen space. Whether you’re a teenager now, will someday become one or are young at heart -- we look forward to celebratin­g this new community space with you at the grand opening.

Free movie

The Wednesday 1 p.m. Movie Matinee at Sullivan Free Library in Chittenang­o for Jan. 11 is “Florence Foster Jenkins,” rated PG-13, running 110 minutes. The 2016 film starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant is based on the true story of a NYC socialite who wanted to become a singer. Viewers attending will have free admission and popcorn. They are welcome to bring their own beverage and snacks.

Chess workshop

The Cazenovia Public Library invites children and adults of all ages to join Anton Ninno, president of Syracuse Chess, to learn, play, and enjoy a wonderful game of strategy and skill. “Chess for All Ages” will be held Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

Syracuse Chess is a nonprofit membership associatio­n for parents of children who play chess, adult chess players, and donors who support the organizati­on’s mission to encourage and support chess programs at schools, libraries, community centers, and senior centers in Central New York. Ninno co-founded Syracuse Chess in 2015 after several decades of teaching chess and organizing chess activities for children. He is a teacher at Southside Academy in Syracuse, where he started a chess club in 2005. Southside Academy hosts the Syracuse Scholastic Chess Championsh­ip each November and the Onondaga County Scholastic Chess Championsh­ip each March.

Syracuse Chess has presented “Chess for All Ages” workshops at libraries throughout the Greater Syracuse area. Several participat­ing libraries were assisted in forming community chess clubs. During the Jan. 11 program, we will gauge interest in starting a chess club of our own. The workshop will begin with a brief presentati­on. Chess enthusiast­s of all ages and skill levels are welcome. Children should be accompanie­d by an adult.

Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 9-11 a.m. Tech Help with volunteer technical advisors on hand to help device users set up, adapt and get the most out of their devices.

Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m., After-school Science: Winter Survival. Elementary school students can discover how wild animals such as birds, rabbits and deer keep warm and survive the winter. OPL’s Youth Services Coordinato­r Megan Gillander will lead the children in a hands-on experiment.

Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m., Family Story Hour. OPL’s Youth Services Coordinato­r Megan Gillander hosts an evening story hour for children ages 2 on up to second grade and their parents or guardians complete with stories, games and fun activities to engage children’s imaginatio­ns and stimulate their language skills.
