Benefit planned for March 11
CANASTOTA >> A benefit for Oneida resident Eric Lawrence will be held Saturday, March 11 from 1-5 p.m. at the Canastota VFW, 3835 Canal Road. Lawrence has been diagnosed with invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Proceeds will be used for medical expenses. The event will feature an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner, music, basket raffles and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $10 per person, $15 per couple and $25 per family. Business After Hours set for March 16
ONEIDA>> The Chamber of Commerce March Business After Hours event will be hosted by Commonfund Mortgage, 210 Farrier Ave., on Thursday, March 16 from 5-7 p.m. The event is free for all chamber members and their employees. Historical association will meet Sunday

Scholarship applications available
VERONA>> Fred “Fritz” Scherz Jr., councilman on the Verona Town Board, will sponsor the 8th annual Fred Scherz Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service. The $250 scholarship will be awarded to a Town of Verona student who is on track to graduate from high school (public or private) or home school by June 30, 2017. Additionally, the student must have lived in the Town of Verona since at least Dec. 1, 2016, and must be voluntarily engaged in community service or must have created a community project. Scherz created the scholarship in 2010 in memory of his father, Fred Scherz Sr. Complete rules and application are available at www.fritzscherz.com. Deadline to apply is May 13.

Presentation on ‘fake news’ at Cazenovia Library
CAZENOVIA>> Cazenovia Public Library welcomes Cazenovia resident Ken Harper to the Community Room on Friday, March 17 at 7 p.m. for a presentation titled “Making Sense of Fake News.” Harper, an award-winning designer, professor, photojournal- ist and media educator, will provide tips and techniques to find relevant and credible information about ongoing events around the world. Harper currently serves as an associate professor and the first director of the Newhouse Center for Global Engagement at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Chili cook off will benefit scholarship fund
