Braeden to serve as 2017 grand marshal

CANASTOTA >> Emmy Award and People’s Choice Award winner Eric Braeden will be coming to Canastota this summer.

The actor, best known for playing the role of Victor Newman for over 37 years on the daytime drama “The Young and the Restless,” has been named the grand marshal of the 2017 Internatio­nal Boxing Hall of Fame Parade of Champions.

“I am deeply honored to be amongst athletes I have admired for so many years,” said Braeden.

Born Hans Gudegast in Kiel, Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1959. After working in Texas and attending college in Montana, he settled in Los Angeles where he pursued an acting career. A versatile performer, he changed his name to Eric Braeden and over the next five decades would appear in over 120 television series and feature films. His film credits include “Escape Fromthe Planet of the Apes” and James Cameron’s “Titanic.” Braeden has starred or guest starred on television programs including “The Rat Patrol,” “Gunsmoke,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Mission Impossible,” “Hope & Faith” and “How I Met Your Mother.”

Braeden has portrayed Victor Newman on “The Young and the Restless” since 1980, earning the 1988 Emmy Award for Outstandin­g Actor in a Daytime Drama

Series and the 1992 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Actor in a Daytime Drama Series. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and recently wrote an autobiogra­phy titled “I’ll Be Damned.”

“The Hall of Fame is so happy that Eric Braeden, one of the most recognized actors in the world and lifelong boxing fan, will be in Canastota in June to serve as the 2017 parade grand marshal,” said IBHOF Executive Director Edward Brophy. “He has led an incredible life and his acting career is iconic. It will be a remarkable day in ‘Boxing’s Hometown’ when he leads the Parade of Champions.”

This year’s parade, scheduled for Sunday, June 11 at 1 p.m., will be part of Induction Weekend ceremonies from June 8-11. Inductees include boxers Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, Marco Antonio Barrera, Johnny ‘ Mi Vida Loca’ Tapia and Eddie Booker; trainer Johnny Lewis; ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr.; judge Jerry Roth; journalist/ broadcaste­r Steve Farhood and broadcaste­r Barry Tompkins.

Over 35 boxing stars from the United States and abroad, including Marvelous Marvin Hagler, “The Raging Bull” Jake LaMotta, “Irish” Micky Ward, James “Lights Out” Toney, Livingston­e Bramble, “Jesse” James Leija, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, Michael “Little Hands of Stone” Carbajal and Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez will be highlighte­d in the Parade of Champions.

“With the lineup of marching bands, boxing celebritie­s, community organizati­ons and now Eric Braeden, this should be our biggest parade ever and an unforgetta­ble day for all,” said parade chairperso­n Charlene Barres.
