ONEIDA » Rose L. Ponticello, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2017, in the Extended Care Facility of the Oneida Healthcare Center, at the age of 101.

She was born on March 30, 1916 in Canastota, a daughter of Salvatore and Lucia Gullo Ponticello. Rose was a graduate of Canastota High School and went on to earn a degree in nursing from the Manhattan State Hospital.

She proudly and courageous­ly served her country as a nurse anesthetis­t in the United States Army for 23 years. Much of that time was spent caring for injured soldiers in field hospitals in Europe, North Africa and Korea. Rose retired from the Army in 1965 with a rank of Major.

Following her retirement, she resided in New York City for more than 50 years, working for the Blood Bank of New York and volunteeri­ng at the Hospital for Special Surgeries in Manhattan.

Rose was predecease­d by three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as close friends in New York City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 from St. Agatha’s Church where the Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Stephen Wirkes, pastor. There will be no calling hours.
