The Week of June 25 marks the first week of the Canastota Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is Building a Better World.
Monday will kick off the week on Monday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. with puppet show by Nancy Sander and Puppets with Pizzazz. Sander and her puppets will perform “Rumpelstiltskin” for children of all ages.
Additionally on Monday, kids will sign up for craft days and special summer library events at the Registration Station on the second floor of the library.
Tuesday: Adults may attend our Book Chat at 1 p.m. in the Lawson Community Room to discuss “Chad Hanna” by Walter Edmonds.
A Craft Day is scheduled for 2 p.m. for grades pre-K through 6.
The Tuesday Night Movie begins at 5 p.m. This week, we’re showing “Manchester by the Sea,” rated R and starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. This heartfelt film is about loss, grief and the peace that comes with acceptance. At 5:30 p.m., kids age 10-15 will build and program robots in Ready, Set Robotics program.
Wednesday at 10 a.m., caregivers and their babies will want to stop in for Baby & Me Lapsit with Miss Angela. Stories, sing alongs and fingerplays are so much fun.
And at 1:30 p.m., the Teen Book Club will meet in the Lawson Community Room. Thursday, Pre School Storytime with Mrs. Liz begins at 10 a.m. Read aloud stories, games and a snack round out this program.
At 5:30 p.m., kids age 10-15 can come to learn about circuits during Arduino Fun. This four-week workshop explores how you can use Arduinos to make things happen in the world around us.
At 6 p.m., join our Evening Knitting Group and learn how to knit.
Tai Chi Outside will be happening on Thursday at 7 p.m. Join us near the library parking lot as we explore this flowing exercise experience with Randy Woodcock. This is a four week program for begin- ners. Friday at 10 a.m., the Friday Morning Knitting Group welcomes new members to join them for knitting, coffee and nice conversation.
At 2 p.m. each Friday during our Summer Reading Program, we’ll be showing a Family Movie. This week, the movie is “Pay It Forward” starring Haley Joel Osment, Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. In this film, a young boy attempts to make the world a better place after his teacher has given him an assignment in class.
Saturday at 10 a.m., join us for some Outdoor Fun at the Library. We’re planning races, games and more outside.
Our regular LEGO Party will take place beginning at 10:30 a.m. for those who prefer a more sedentary activity.
Loaves & Fishes
The Loaves & Fishes hospitality luncheons held at the United Methodist Church, 144 Center St., Canastota will be serving nutritious meals from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 26-30, sponsored by the Canastota Association of Churches.
You are invited to come and enjoy lunch and fellowship and receive a bag lunch for your supper.
Swimming lessons
The Town of Vernon will sponsor a free instructional swim program for all Town of Vernon residents who are at least kindergarten age by Sept. 1 up to age 12. The program will be held Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks, June 26 through July 26 at the City of Sherrill pool. All children must have signed permission slips on file at the Town Office Building. Applications are distributed in the elementary school classes and are available at the Town Office Building. Concert at library
Cazenovia Public Library will host a special concert by local musician Dave Robertson on Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room.
Robertson, a singersongwriter from Cazenovia, performs folk and modern-folk originals as well as covers of Neil Young, John Prine, Ryan Adams, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Cat Ste- vens. Summer concerts begin
Here are some of the free summer concerts that will begin this week:
The Summer Concert Series at Reilly-Mumford Memorial Park in Sherrill kicks off Tuesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. with awardwinning band E.S.P. featuring Kirsten Tegtmeyer. The band’s music is inspired by the tradition of jazz improvisation yet features a contemporary sound that’s appealing to a wide audience. Come listen to this talented group that includes Sherrill resident Evan DuChene.
Bring lawn chairs, blankets and an umbrella in case of light rain. Concerts will be held each Tuesday through Aug. 29.
In Chittenango at the Dr. West Park from 6-8 p.m. each Tuesday will be music for your listening pleasure. June 27 will feature Classic Groove. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Plenty of parking is available. No rain dates.
The Village of Canastota Recreation Commission is proud to present its 2017 Summer Concert Series lineup on Thursdays from June 29 through Aug. 17 at the International Boxing Hall of Fame Events Pavilion. All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes and enjoy the music. The Canastota Community Band will entertain on June 29. You have heard them perform in local parades and community events -- now come spend an evening and be entertained by your friends and neighbors. No rain date.

The Madison County Department of Health will hold a rabies vaccination clinic on Wednesday, June 28 at the Morrisville Agriculture Center, 100 Eaton St. from 5-7 p.m.
Blood drive
Oneida Public Library, 220 Broad St. will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday, June 28 from 1-6 p.m.
