The Oneida Daily Dispatch (Oneida, NY)
Lighthouse centennial today
100 Years
Bring the whole family to celebrate the centennial of the Three Sisters lighthouses on Oneida Lake today. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Rear Range Lighthouse Park, 778 County Route 37 in Brewerton.
Enjoy live entertainment, a chicken barbecue presented by the Central Square Band Boosters Club, and children’s fishing tournament led by Bartell Road Bait and Tackle. The contest runs from noon to 2 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony. Solar Sal offers free rides on a solar-powered canal boat, which will circle Frenchman’s Island for views of that lighthouse. Oswego Expeditions provides free kayak paddling adventures.
The commemoration is made possible in part by a $500 grant through the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. Three Sisters lighthouses are located in Brewerton, on Frenchman’s Island, and at Verona Beach. Since 1917, the beacons have guided commercial and recreational watercraft along the 22-mile stretch of Oneida Lake. The largest body of water located entirely within New York state, the lake serves as a connection between the Erie Canal and Oswego Canal.
The Verona Beach Lighthouse Association joins the town of Hastings and the Fort Brewerton Greater Oneida Lake Chamber of Commerce with centennial festivities. That lighthouse will be open from noon to 3 p.m.
A French and Indian War encampment is scheduled to take place through Monday at Fort Brewerton on Route 11. For more information, call the fort at 315-668-8801.
Other activities will be going on Monday, July 3, where families can continue the celebration of Independence Day at Riverfront Park in Brewerton from noon to 6 p.m. A Kids Zone play area will feature a dunk tank. Fireworks over the river, presented by the Fort Brewerton Greater Oneida Lake Chamber of Commerce, will be held in the evening.
For more information on any of the activities, contact the chamber of commerce at 315-6683408, or for the Three Sisters commemoration, contact Luella LeClair at 315519-2627.

Stating off Monday, July 10, at 10 a.m., Youth Services Coordinator Megan Gillander will hold a weekly series of four program for elementary students that aims through play and ground activities to “build a better world through kindness.”
For one, they will assemble “You Matter Bags” in July to be handed out to individuals in need of a boost. On jUly 17, they will work together to construct a little free library, a small but decorative book depository set out in the community from which anyone can take a book and return it or replace it with another. Little free libraries with community support have come quite popular in big and small cities.

By the time of the workshop performance July 14 at 5 p.m., students will be “voice actors” performing for family and friends the newest radio sensation “The Magic Hat: The OPL Kids Radio Show.” The show designed by Lemery will have something for every young actor to do, from reading classic children’s stories to doing comic skits, to singing commercials to producing weird sound effects.
The voice-acting workshop is limited to 18 children. Registration is required.
