Frederick C. Haas, 87, of Chittenango
CHITTENANGO » Frederick C. “Dick” Haas, 87, of Chittenango passed away at home while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017.
He was born on Oct. 11, 1929 and was a lifelong resident of Chittenango.
He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Armer Nell (Becker); his wife of 49 years, Mary “Sue” Haas; stepdaughter Gail Thompson Smith, and his six sisters. He is survived by daughters Cathy (Dale) Nagel, Barbara (Richard) Lavier, Maribeth (Robert) Ostrander; son, James (Mary Piron) Haas; stepson, Michael (Joanne) Thompson; 14 grandchildren, 17 greatgrandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was employed for many years by Metropolitan Life. He also worked for Mayers’ Meat Market and was owner and proprietor of Bart’s Country Store in Vernon Center. He served four years in the US Army First Engineers Battalion with an honorable discharge in 1952. During his life, Dick was active in many organizations including: Past President of the Chittenango Rotary Club, Past Commander of William H. Cain American Legion Post 1287, 20 year member of Chittenango Fire Company, Village Trustee and acting mayor of Chittenango and on the Board of Directors of the Veterans of the First Engineers Battalion. Dick liked spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to his hunting trip to the Adirondacks every year since 1946. He and Sue would travel to Florida for the winter, and he continued to go after her death. He especially enjoyed his friends and activities at Hide-A-Way in Florida.
Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 13 from 4-7 p.m. at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango.
