CHITTENANG­O » Frederick C. “Dick” Haas, 87, of Chittenang­o passed away at home while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1929 and was a lifelong resident of Chittenang­o.

He was predecease­d by his parents, Peter and Armer Nell (Becker); his wife of 49 years, Mary “Sue” Haas; stepdaught­er Gail Thompson Smith, and his six sisters. He is survived by daughters Cathy (Dale) Nagel, Barbara (Richard) Lavier, Maribeth (Robert) Ostrander; son, James (Mary Piron) Haas; stepson, Michael (Joanne) Thompson; 14 grandchild­ren, 17 greatgrand­children as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was employed for many years by Metropolit­an Life. He also worked for Mayers’ Meat Market and was owner and proprietor of Bart’s Country Store in Vernon Center. He served four years in the US Army First Engineers Battalion with an honorable discharge in 1952. During his life, Dick was active in many organizati­ons including: Past President of the Chittenang­o Rotary Club, Past Commander of William H. Cain American Legion Post 1287, 20 year member of Chittenang­o Fire Company, Village Trustee and acting mayor of Chittenang­o and on the Board of Directors of the Veterans of the First Engineers Battalion. Dick liked spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to his hunting trip to the Adirondack­s every year since 1946. He and Sue would travel to Florida for the winter, and he continued to go after her death. He especially enjoyed his friends and activities at Hide-A-Way in Florida.

Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 13 from 4-7 p.m. at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenang­o. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenang­o.
