Abolition Weekend continues today
Events include talks about Beriah Green, Gerrit Smith, Angelina Grimke and other famous abolitionists.
PETERBORO » The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum( NAHOF) will continue its 2017 commemoration ceremonies today at 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, site of the inaugural meeting of the New York State Antislavery Society in 1835.
Events include a 9 a.m. tour of Beriah Green’s Utica conducted by Oneida County Freedom Trail. Jan DeAmicis and Mary Hayes Gordon, co- chairs of the Oneida County Freedom Trail, will meet visitors in Utica for a driving and walking tour of abolition sites in Utica during Beriah Green’s life. The tour will include Green’s burial site and the site of the Oneida Institute, where Green served as President. For more information: jandeamicis@roadrunner.com
At 12:30 p.m. on Sun- day, eight libraries in Madison and Oneida counties, and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum will host a luncheon culminating a month long community Read of Sue Monk Kidd’s popular historical novel, “The Invention of Wings.” The book describes the early lives of slaves Charlotte and Hetty and of their owners Sarah and Angelina Grimké in Charleston, S.C., and the later abolition lives of the Grimkés, including vis- its to Peterboro. The Read was launched Sept. 24 during the Peterboro Women’s History Weekend.
At 2 p.m. author Louise Knight will present “American Sisters: Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the First Fight for Human Rights.”
