ONEIDA, N.Y. » This Thanksgiving, the Oneida High School is inviting the community to help fill the local food pantry as part of the Turkey Trot.

A 5K run/walk, the Turkey Trot combines both exercise and charity at Oneida High School on Thursday, Nov. 23 as the registration cost is two cans of nonperishable food items and $10.

“It’s a great event,” said organizer Scott Fallon, an OCSD gym teacher and runner. In preparation for the event, Fallon designed the roughly 3.1 mile course and enlisted the help of the Class of 2018. The class has been helping Fallon clear portions of the Oneida Rail Trail in preparation of the Turkey Trot over the course of the last few day.

“The kids have been great,” Fallon said. “Working hard.”

Fallon says that in addition to being a race and food raising effort, the Turkey Trot is also dedicated to Therese Costello. Costello, a peer of Fallon’s, has plied her trade as a gym teacher

and coach for more than three decades.

All runners participating in the Turkey Trot will receive a sports performance shirt commemorating the event.

Costumes, though not required, are encouraged. Prizewinners and categories for the costume feature of the race will be determined following the race.

Registration for the Turkey Trot begins at 7:45 a.m. and continues until 8:45 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m., and there will also be a shorter, one-mile fun run for children.

All proceeds will go to the Oneida Food Pantry, Oneida All Sports Booster, and OHS Class of 2018.

Those who intend to participate are asked to email organizer Scott Fallon at: sfallon@oneidacsd,org.
