PRESERVATION CONTINUES

1909 time capsule contents to be displayed soon

Madison County is continuing to work to dry and separate the records that came out of the Madison County Courthouse time capsule on Monday, April 16, with the goal of being able to put them on display soon.

The time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the Madison County Courthouse on Jan. 7, 1909. Despite being tightly sealed within a copper box, the contents were saturated with water. Representatives fromthe county met with New York State Archives to better ascertain the next steps needed to stabilize and preserve the documents as many are in poor condition.

An inventory of what was in the time capsule has been completed. Once the items have been properly preserved, they will be put on display in the County Office Building. Details will go out through local newsmedia as well as Madison County’s social

media feeds.
