For more than 10 years, Sarah Marshall has been helping making Oneida “a bit of America at its best,” and on Wednesday, Oneida honored her for her efforts.

“If I had to pick one word to describe Sarah, I’d say ‘passionate’,” said Oneida Healthcare spokesman Kevin Prosser as he and Dr. Matt Allen presented Marshall with the Greater Oneida Chamber of Commerce’s 13th annual Business at its Best Award.

“Marshall’s dedication to supporting Oneida goes well beyond her role as a business owner,” Prosser said. She led the fundraising effort to build dugouts for the high school girls’

softball team; she’s been a “dedicated” member of the Oneida Rotary; she served on the board of trustees for BRIDGES; Marshall is a member of the Oneida City School District Foundation; the Oneida Music Boosters Club; the Oneida City Center Committee; and she leads a group of Rotarians and local teens in planting flowers for the annual Memorial Day ceremony every year.

“Sarah’s commitment to the community knows no bounds,” Prosser said.

“Thank you for making me part of the community,” Marshall said.

Born in Burma as the daughter of a diplomat, Marshall spent much of her formative years abroad, said her cousin Mary Pat Adams. But even with all the trips to various countries, Marshall always thought of Oneida as one of her homes, and eventually settled here with her husband Tom.

In 2004, she established Sarah Marshall, CPA, out of her home in Munnsville, offering tax services to local individuals and small busi- nesses. She quickly moved to a third-floor office above Chase Bank in Oneida, followed by purchasing an office building at 317 Main St., where she operates her business today with two full-time employees.

“Sarah and her team’s mission is to support the growth and sustainability of small businesses in the greater Oneida area,” Prosser said. “Their dedication to this cause is essential to the strength of our community and our surrounding neighbors.”

Marshall is “very, very involved with the community,” said Mayor Leo Matzke, who described Marshall as a “great person” as he proclaimed June 6, 2018, as Sarah Marshall Day.

“I think there’s great potential for this community,” Marshall said. “We all ready have great infrastructure here with our school. We’ve got a fabulous sports programand drama program.”

For Marshall, children and youths are a driving passion, and it makes Oneida an ideal place to live and work.

“It’s a community that cares about its kids,” she said.
